A GROUP of young people from across the district who have spent their summer working with those who have learning difficulties have been applauded by Lichfield MP Michael Fabicant.
The 16 and 17 year-olds took part in the National Citizen Service – a personal and social development project which saw them complete a two-week residential team-building course including caving, rock-climbing and archery, at Standon Bowers and Chasewater.
This was followed by time spent, over a four week period, hosting people with learning difficulties at Minster Hall Youth Centre.
Together they enjoyed cake-baking and decorating and played sports.
Jess Hodgkins, one of the 23-strong group, said: “We worked with people who have learning difficulties and some who are physically disabled.
“It pushed us out of our comfort zone.”
Lichfield MP Michael Fabricant visited the group at Minster Youth Centre last Friday (August 30) and watched them give a presentation about their experiences.
“I think this project is brilliant,” saie Michael.
“I did not know much about it before I came but it is fantastic and I would recommend that other young people take part.”
The Lichfield group, who were supported by youth workers Nicky Johnson, Juned Ahmed, Andy Chambers, Liz Bacon and Cher Farmer, will be giving the presentation again on September 9 at the Gatehouse Theatre Stafford together with other groups from across the county.
Project officer for Staffordshire Youth and Community Service, Lisa Farrall said: “NCS is an opportunity for young people to make new friends, learn new skills and have new exciting experiences
“The social action projects have an amazing and lasting legacy within the community.
“We also run a shorter version of NCS in autumn and spring for year 12 students (17 year-olds), consisting of a 3 day residential and a community project in the month that followed in October Half Term and Spring Half Term.
“If young people or parents would like to find out more about signing up they can visit www.youthbox.info/ncs or www.ncsyes.co.uk websites, or email email@example.com”
