THE CREATOR of a beautiful family "fairy trail" near Lichfield has told the Mercury of her sadness after it was targeted by vandals.

The Green Fairy Trail at the Heart of the Country Village, Swinfen, is a free experience for visitors featuring items that have either been salvaged, donated or recycled out of everyday household waste.

Set in woodland with picnic benches, it's an "imaginative space" where families can spend as much time as they wish.

Last Friday (June 9) someone vandalised the trail writing swear words in correction fluid on signs and trees, broke doors and permanently damaged some of the installations.

Katharina Stubbs, who created the Green Fairy Trail, said: "Initially it was upsetting on a personal level because the Green Fairy Trail is such a labour of love.

"However, on reflection I'm more upset for all the friends and visitors of the Green Fairies who enjoy the trail so much.

"My vision was to try to create a dialogue about waste, landfill and how children are just as happy playing with an up-cycled milk carton as an expensive piece of landfill from Toys-R-Us.

"For a few weeks I've been aware that someone has been tampering with the trail but I wrote it off as unsupervised toddlers having fun."

Katharina said that since the incident she had pondered whether or not to continue with the trail because of the maintenance required which she has to squeeze in around work and family.

But she has vowed to carry on mostly because of the response she has received on social media.

"A Green Fairy Facebook post I wrote on Saturday has so far been seen by over 15,000 people with floods of touching comments from folk who have frequented the trail," said Katharina.

"I'm truly moved to read about people's stories and experiences.

"Two friends wrote about a visit where, in the thick in the woodland one friend confessed to the other that she was pregnant.

"On returning home the other friend discovered she was too!

"They both wrote about the magic of the fairy woods and a day they'll never forget.

"These are the moments that connect and inspire me to continue on with my 'green' vision."
